It wasn’t all bad for Jets offense against Buccaneers

Observations from the Jets’ joint practice with the Buccaneers on Wednesday.

Pass One Test

No offensive line, no problems.

The Jets’ offense dominated 7-on-7s when Aaron Rodgers went 3-for-3, Zach Wilson went 3-for-4 and Tim Boyle went 3-for-4, alternating one snap at a time.

Rodgers’ first completion was caught by Garrett Wilson on his fingertips but Zach Wilson’s subsequent sideline strike to Irvin Charles was the prettiest throw.

Fail Another

Enter the offensive line, enter problems.

Rodgers was “sacked” six times when a shorthanded first-team of blockers failed during 11-on-11.

The top three centers started on the interior, with Connor McGovern snapping, Joe Tippman at left guard and Wes Schweitzer at right guard.

Wilson threw a pick-six as the second-team offense didn’t fare much better.

Rodgers Report

Rodgers completed 16 of 20 passes when he eluded pressure, though most were quick-hitters.

The best throw in an 11-on-11 period was down the seam to longtime running mate Randall Cobb for a first down, though the drive ended without any points.

Caught My Eye

There were an abnormal number of skirmishes for the first day of joint practices with the Buccaneers.

Usually, tempers flare more on the second day (there won’t be a second day between these teams).

OT Billy Turner and Buccaneers LB Lavonte David were at the center of one.

Special teams gunners sparked another.

“If you want to get a little extra conditioning in and have a little skirmish and pushing and shoving, go ahead,” head coach Robert Saleh said. “It’s not going to hurt you. It doesn’t bother me.”

Injury Report

Buccaneers WR Russell Gage suffered a season-ending knee injury on a non-contact play during individual drills against the Jets cornerbacks. LG Laken Tomlinson (leg), RG Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) and backup OT Carter Warren (undisclosed) did not practice. WR Corey Davis (excused personal day) was not spotted. DE Carl Lawson (back) was held out in the “rest phase” after receiving some treatment.
