Orioles’ John Angelos appears to admit Kevin Brown’s suspension

While Baltimore Orioles’ officials tried to deny that MASN broadcaster Kevin Brown had been suspended over benign comments prior to a game in Tampa, John Angelos appeared to confirm that was the case in a new interview.

While speaking with New York Times, the team’s CEO appeared to acknowledge Brown’s discipline, which led to an outcry from across the baseball world over the Orioles’ actions.

Reports at the time indicated that the decision came from ownership, though Angelos indicated that he didn’t know how the decision was made.

“Nothing like that is going to happen again,” Angelos said. “It shouldn’t have happened once.”

Angelos also claimed that the club was reviewing the internal process that led to Brown’s discipline and that he hoped the beloved broadcaster would remain with the Orioles for a long time.

Awful Announcing was the first to report that Brown had been removed from the broadcast booth following a comment about the team’s lack of success in recent years against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“It’s been a minute,” he said in a pregame segment on July 23 in Tampa. “The Orioles split a two-gamer with the Rays in June. They had lost their last 15 series here at Tropicana Field. … Already got three and two at the Trop this year after winning three of 18 the previous three years combined.”

It was enough to reportedly irk ownership and after a fill-in stint in the radio booth, Brown would not be heard from on-air again until he made his return to the broadcast booth on Aug. 11 in Seattle.

Brown did release a statement prior to his return in which he said the media had “mischaracterized” the situation, though many were quick to express skepticism over whether those were really the broadcaster’s true feelings on the situation.
