Hawai’i vs. Vanderbilt pick

One of the most intriguing games of Week 0 takes us to Nashville where the Vanderbilt Commodores host the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Commodores are favored by 17.5 points on BetMGM Sportsbook. That spread may jump off the page, because, well, it’s Vanderbilt, but it may not be so crazy once you dig into the matchup.

You may be surprised to learn that Vanderbilt went 5-7 last season and it beat Florida and a ranked Kentucky team in the process. That tells you that the Commodores have evolved past being the clear doormat of the SEC and that should spell trouble for the Rainbow Warriors in this matchup.

One of Vanderbilt’s wins last year actually came against Hawai’i when it absolutely walloped the Rainbow Warriors 63-10 in the season opener last year in Honolulu. Since that game, the Commodores continued to improve over the course of last season, so it is not hard to imagine them blowing out Hawai’i this time in Nashville.

Vandy head coach Clark Lea clearly has a successful plan in place for his program and it would not be surprising if the Commodores ended their season in a bowl game for the first time since 2018. With sophomore quarterback A.J. Swann returning to the team, the trajectory of Vanderbilt seems to be going up.

Meanwhile, Hawai’i went 3-10 in 2022 and lost all six of its road games. Quarterback Brandon Schager is back after an okay campaign last year, and while he may be able to guide the Rainbow Warriors through their Mountain West schedule, he probably won’t be able to make much of a difference in this game. Last season’s rushing leader Dedrick Parson has exhausted his eligibility as well, so that’s one more hole to fill for the ‘Bows.

In all, Vanderbilt only being favored by 17.5 points feels way too low given the state of both these programs.
