Vikings acquire Cam Akers in trade with Rams

Cam Akers is on his way out of Los Angeles.

The Rams are trading the running back to the Vikings, according to multiple reports.

The teams are also swapping conditional-late-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Vikings are getting seventh-rounder in exchange for a sixth-round selection, according to ESPN.

Akers had 29 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown in the Rams’ Week 1 win over the Seahawks but was then a healthy scratch in a Week 2 loss against the rival 49ers.

On Monday, Rams head coach Sean McVay indicated the team was trending toward dealing the running back away.

“(General manager) Les (Snead) has talked to a handful of teams and worked with (Akers’ agent) David Mulugheta and seeing if there is some interest for him out there,” McVay said Monday. “That’s the direction we’re headed.”

Akers, a 2020 second-round draft pick, posted on X, formerly known on Twitter that he was “confused” when he wasn’t playing against San Francisco.

“I’m just as confused as everybody else. I’m blessed though,” he wrote.

McVay didn’t see it that way.

“I feel very good about the clarity that was provided to both he and David Mulguheta in terms of why we’re at where we are,” the coach said Monday. “You don’t want to go back and forth on some of the things that have occurred.

Over four NFL seasons, the 24-year-old has racked up 1,443 yards (4.0 yards per attempt) on 360 carries with 10 touchdowns.

He set career-highs with 786 yards and seven rushing touchdowns in 2022.

He joins a Vikings team that has the worst rushing attack in the NFL this season, picking up just 69 yards on 26 attempts.

Minnesota is the only team that is averaging fewer than three yards per carry through two weeks.

Lead back Alexander Mattison has struggled in taking over the reins from current Jet Dalvin Cook, picking up just 62 yards on 19 carries this year.
