When Will ESPN BET Launch?

Expect ESPN BET to launch this Fall. Penn Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden said in an August earnings call that the goal is for ESPN BET to be available before Thanksgiving, so November seems like a reasonable time for it to launch. There are complications in getting any national online sportsbook ready for the public, but ESPN’s new partner Penn Entertainment has done this before with Barstool Sportsbook.

This is what we know about the brand so far in terms of a timeline:

  • August 8, 2023: PENN Entertainment announces massive partnership with ESPN to launch ESPN BET after parting with Barstool Sports.
  • November 2023: The goal for PENN Entertainment is to have ESPN BET launch in November 2023 as a rebranded version of Barstool Sportsbook.

It cost PENN Entertainment $1.5 billion for a 10-year deal to use the ESPN branding. Not only that, PENN also granted ESPN warrants worth $500 million to buy 31.8 million shares of PENN stock, which will be vested during the course of the deal. Additionally, the deal gives PENN access to ESPN personalities and properties, such as articles, live sports broadcasts, and studio shows.

ESPN BET Sportsbook will also be able to use the sports betting licenses that PENN Entertainment has in the 16 legal betting states where Barstool Sportbook currently operates. As part of this process, Barstool Sportsbook will be rebranded as ESPN BET and that will give it a whole new look for the ESPN BET launch. The final step of the deal for PENN National Gaming was selling 100% of the Barstool Sports brand back to Barstool founder Dave Portnoy. It is unclear what the future looks like for Barstool Sportsbook.

ESPN BET will be the sports network’s first foray into legal online betting.

How ESPN BET Will Impact Sports Betting Markets

ESPN is one of the strongest brands in American sports, and because of that, ESPN BET could grow quickly. The Worldwide Leader has so many ways to promote the ESPN-branded Sportsbook and it would not be surprising if the ESPN BET promo code is prominently advertised on ESPN’s telecasts and its massive network of social media channels. Expect the ESPN BET mobile app to be very visible as well.

It obviously was not cheap for PENN Entertainment to purchase the naming rights for ESPN BET, but it might just be worth the price. PENN is projecting a 20% market share for ESPN BET by 2027, which is a big jump from Barstool Sportsbook’s market share which is only around 5%.

If ESPN BET does reach that level of market share, it would have a significant impact on the sports betting industry. It remains to be seen exactly how much of a dent ESPN BET will make in the United States sports betting market, but it seems like the goal is to grow as quickly as possible.

ESPN BET vs. Other Sportsbooks

With so many online sports betting companies operating in the United States, ESPN’s strong branding will be what helps it stand out among the ever-growing competition in the online sportsbook market. It is not some upstart online sportsbook with low brand recognition or an overseas sportsbook that most American bettors aren’t familiar with. Instead, it is the biggest and most notable brand in sports media that has been around since the 1970s.

Everyone knows ESPN and should expect the sports entertainment company to use its massive reach to promote ESPN BET.

The ESPN brand should also help ESPN BET secure partnerships with sports arenas and professional teams. ESPN BET will have advertising in some sports arenas and stadiums around the country, and viewers can anticipate those advertisements to be shown on ESPN telecasts.

ESPN BET will have a built-in base of sports bettors readily available because it is going to launch in the 16 states where Barstool Sportsbook is already operating. Check out the chart below to see the current retail partners for Barstool Sportsbook and likely ESPN BET once it goes live.

Future ESPN Bet states

We’re expecting ESPN BET to be live in a few markets, including the following states with legal online sports betting:

ESPN BET Kentucky

Kentucky online sports betting begins on Sept. 28, so it is unlikely that ESPN BET will officially launch by that date. That does not mean it won’t be present in Kentucky, though, it’s just that the ESPN BET Kentucky Sportsbook will probably hit the scene sometime later on in the Fall of 2023. There are 27 total sports betting licenses available in Kentucky and ESPN BET has secured one of them. Bettors in the Bluegrass State should keep an eye out for the ESPN BET promo code so they can get a head start when it does go live.

ESPN BET North Carolina

North Carolina also joined the online sports betting world when Governor Roy Cooper signed HB 347 into law in June, and ESPN BET Sportsbook is expected to get in on the action in the Tar Heel State. The ESPN BET Sportsbook will be fully operational by the time sports betting officially goes live in January 2024. When the time comes, the ESPN BET promo code for North Carolina should have a very attractive offer for new users.

ESPN BET Available Sports and Leagues

An online sports betting platform can only function if it offers all the most popular sports leagues, and we expect ESPN BET to make sure it has everything covered.

ESPN BET Available Bet Types

As is the case with any prominent sports betting app or website, players can expect ESPN BET to come fully loaded with tons of different ways to wager. The site should cover everything from spreads and totals to player props and Same Game Parlays.

Futures

A futures bet is a wager on the outcome of an event that will be decided in the future. Examples of this would be a futures bet on who will win the NFC West, a bet on who wins March Madness, or a team’s win total. It could also be a bet on which player will win the MVP or Rookie of the Year. Futures bets can be placed before or during the season, although odds change as the event progresses.

Totals or Over/Under

This type of bet allows you, the bettor, to wager on the outcome of the game without picking a favored team. Totals, AKA over/under bets, are when you’re betting on the total score earned by both teams and added together.

Spreads

Spread bets are about the point differential in a given game. So if the Cowboys are 6.5-point favorites over the Giants, and Dallas just wins by four points, then the Giants would cover the spread. Even though the Cowboys won the game, they did not cover because they did not win by enough points.

Moneylines

This is just a bet on who wins a game. Underdogs have better odds while favorites are less valued. Moneyline bets are a good place to start for inexperienced bettors.

Parlays

Parlays are multiple bets combined into one wager. For instance, if you think the 49ers, Dolphins, and Vikings each cover the spread, you can stack those wagers together as a parlay. The more legs in the parlay, the more valuable it is when it hits. However, a parlay gets more and more difficult to win with more legs.

Many online sportsbooks have offered Same Game Parlays (SGP), which are parlays consisting of bets from just one game. We fully expect SGP’s to be available on ESPN BET.

Prop Bets

A prop bet is a wager on statistical results in a game. This would be a bet on how many passing yards Joe Burrow finishes with in a given game or the amount of points scored by Luka Doncic during a game.

Round Robins

Round Robin bets are groupings of parlays all in the same wager. So if you like five separate NFL teams to cover over the weekend, betting on them in a round robin means you’re betting on different combinations from the games you bet on, instead of making one five-team parlay.

Teasers

A teaser bet is a type of parlay bet that allows the bettor to alter the point spread of a game so the bet is easier to win. In turn, the sportsbook will lower the payout if the teaser does happen to win.

Banking Options at ESPN BET

ESPN BET users should expect the standard deposit and withdrawal methods offered by most online sportsbooks. Since ESPN BET is going to be operated by Penn National Gaming, the same company that ran Barstool Sportsbook, it should have the same payment and withdrawal options offered by Barstool. Sports bettors should be able to find a familiar banking option on ESPN BET:

  • Online Banking
  • Credit or Debit Card
  • PayPal
  • Apple Pay
  • PayNearMe
  • Wire Transfer
  • ACH
  • eCheck

Responsible Gambling at ESPN BET

It would be very surprising if ESPN BET cuts corners when it comes to responsible gambling. ESPN has the resources and the legal backing to make sure the ESPN BET Sportsbook complies with sports betting regulations. In fact, ESPN said in a recent press release that it will “Use its platforms to educate sports fans on responsible gaming,” along with creating a responsible gaming committee, enacting responsible marketing policies, and working with industry experts for best practices.

Will there be a new rewards program for ESPN BET users?

Any sort of rewards program tied to ESPN BET would probably be very attractive to potential bettors, but at this time we don’t know what it will look like. Since ESPN BET would fall under the umbrella of the Walt Disney Company, there might be a way to implement a rewards system that lets ESPN BET users get perks from Watch ESPN, ESPN+, Disney+, Marvel, etc. One way to do this would be to give users a free month of ESPN+ for signing up with the ESPN BET app.

Similar rewards systems are present at other online sportsbooks. Fanatics Sportsbook does a good job of this by giving its bettors a certain percentage of FanCash for each bet they place, which can then be used to purchase merchandise on Fanatics.com. With the resources of Penn Entertainment and Disney behind it, ESPN BET could really gain some traction in the online sportsbook market by instituting a rewards program.
