On Wednesday, the Mets announced Starling Marte (groin) would be shut down for the season. Thursday afternoon, it was Jeff McNeil (elbow) whose season was officially stopped.
In the very early hours of Friday morning, Brandon Nimmo’s year might have reached its premature end.
The Mets center fielder was removed from Thursday’s suspended game before the fifth inning with an issue with his AC joint in his right shoulder.
Initial X-rays “looked good,” manager Buck Showalter said, but Nimmo will get an MRI on Friday afternoon. It is possible and perhaps likely he has played his final game of the season.
“He may wake up and feel fine,” Showalter said after the Mets and Marlins could not finish a game that Miami led, 2-1, in the top of the ninth inning at Citi Field. “I’m not expecting that, but I’m not going to rule it out.”
Nimmo had dove and hit the grass hard trying to catch a Jorge Soler single in the fourth inning.
He was replaced by Rafael Ortega.
Nimmo has been a rare Met who has just about lived up to expectations this season.
If his year is done, he would finish with an .829 OPS, a career-high 24 home runs and a career-high 152 games played.
He has been a steady force at the top of the lineup and a consistently solid center fielder in the first year of his eight-year, $162 million contract.
