D-backs troll Phillies with flag planting, Meek Mill song after NLCS

The Diamondbacks were plenty excited to win the National League pennant — and they let Philadelphia know it.

After upsetting the Phillies with a 4-2 win in Game 7 of the NLCS to reach the World Series, the Diamondbacks had some fun both on the field at Citizens Bank Park and inside the clubhouse during a raucous celebration.

Outfielder Alek Thomas, whose game-tying, pinch-hit home run in Game 4 helped propel the Diamondbacks to a momentum-shifting victory, was seen holding the Diamondbacks’ National League pennant and literally planting it on the infield grass on the third base side.

And, inside the clubhouse, it seemed that the Diamondbacks were having some fun at Philadelphia’s expense.

Inside the alcohol-filled chaos inside the stadium, the Diamondbacks were heard playing the song “Dreams and Nightmares” by Meek Mill, who happens to be a born-and-raised Philadelphian.

It also happened to be a song the rapper performed live on the field at Citizens Bank Park before Game 5 of the 2022 World Series.

But, on this night, it was Arizona listening to a recorded rendition of the song, and NLCS MVP Ketel Marte was seeing having a grand old time while the song played.

Marte, in an Instagram Live, was seen taking a swig of a beverage as he bobbed his head along to the tune before having a quick dance with outfielder and ex-Met Tommy Pham.

The excited, loose attitude seemed to fit how manager Torey Lovullo described his team before Game 7.

“They’re on their phones, checking what they want to check,” Lovullo said, according to the Associated Press. “There’s different conversations, groups of two or three. They’re in the food room eating their Philly cheesesteaks. A couple guys are playing games. So it’s very typical.”

After the game, Lovullo said he couldn’t be more proud of his guys.

“I’ve said it a million times, and I’ll say it again: A connected team is a very dangerous team,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “No matter what happened in those times of crisis, these guys stuck together.”

Arizona now gets to travel to Texas to take on the Rangers in the World Series, its first trip to the Fall Classic since 2001.

Game 1 is on Friday night.
