The question on whether or not members of the royal family ever carry money has seemingly been answered, as the queen, 76, had to stop shopping at a farmers market in Nairobi, Kenya, during her state visit on Thursday.
Camilla opted to purchase some jewelry at a local business. When she proved short of cash, her aide had to ask employees for their personal information so the queen could pay them back later.
Items that she’s taking back home to the United Kingdom include a blanket, a basket, hand creams and cashew butter, according to the Daily Mail.
The basket, costing 4,000 Kenyan shillings, was called “beautiful” by Camilla.
When Camilla went to another vendor at the farmers market, the blanket that she wanted cost twice as much cash as she had left.
At a booth run by owner Shininah Dajom, the former Duchess of Cornwall saw a jar of cashew spread that she just had to have too.
Dajom needed to be paid her 3,000 shillings at a later date, but she didn’t appear annoyed.
“What that means is that the money is in the bank, not in the hand,” she joked. “Her Majesty’s credit is very good!”
“Perhaps they should pay me 3,000 sterling pounds,” Dajom quipped.
According to CBS, royals haven’t carried money since the 1500s under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Coins were thought to harbor germs and insects so, instead, household workers would make sure to have some on hand for the family.
Prince Harry hilariously revealed in 2021 that he never carries money on him.
During an episode of “The Late Late Show,” the Duke of Sussex, 39, and host James Corden, 45, went on a bus tour of LA and the comedian joked that Harry needed to pay the fare.
“You know, us royals, we don’t carry cash,” Harry laughed.
Once the prince and his pal got on board, he noted: “This is very nice. It’s the first time I’ve been on an open top bus.”
He added: “In London I always see them cruising around tourists, and thought that would be really good fun because when you live in an area, you never actually go sightseeing. I’ve always wanted to go sightseeing.”
