Sterling Shepard is already encouraged by what he has seen from Daniel Jones since the quarterback suffered a torn right ACL in Sunday’s loss to the Raiders.
Though Jones has yet to have surgery as he waits for the swelling in his knee to go down, he has begun the road back by prehabbing, something Shepard did last year after his torn left ACL.
“I was so proud of him, because some people want to take a little break after something big like that happens. With the surgery nowadays, with the knee, you have to jump right on it,” Shepard told The Post. “You have to begin the prehab and start to strengthen the leg. … The first time I saw him, he was already prehabbing and riding on the [exercise] bike. He was definitely in the right headspace, and I’m happy to see him there.”
Shepard believes it’s an important part of the process of returning, to do that extra work on your own in what is a long road back to health.
It can make a major difference.
During his rehab, Shepard kept a journal, detailing how he was feeling.
“I found it to be pretty good,” said Shepard, who is partnering with La Quinta by Wyndham for personalized holiday hype talks at LaQuinta.com/hype. “I started doing it, took a break from time to time, but it is kind of cool to go back and look at some of the notes and see where I was at. But I pretty much remember each stage of it. It’s a grueling process.”
Coach Brian Daboll said he has spoken to safety Xavier McKinney about his postgame comments on Sunday, but declined to offer much substance of that conversation other than to say it went well.
After the loss to the Raiders, McKinney said Giants coaches haven’t been listening to the team leaders.
“It was one of those things where you have some of your leaders, captains from a defensive standpoint, trying to switch things up. And just not really being heard,” McKinney said at the time.
One of nine elected captains, McKinney told reporters Tuesday that he met with defensive coordinator Wink Martindale to clear the air.
“We got on the same page, and we’re keeping everything in-house,” McKinney said. “We’re on good terms, so everything is good.”
Offensive tackle Evan Neal (knee) is unlikely to play Sunday, Daboll said.
He listed him as “week-to-week.” Neal, cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (neck/concussion), running back Deon Jackson (concussion), defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (rest) and offensive lineman Sean Harlow (personal matter) didn’t practice Wednesday.
Wide receiver Parris Campbell (hamstring), outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari (ankle), offensive tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and running back Jashaun Corbin (hamstring) were limited.
Ojulari was designated to return to practice Wednesday.
He has been on injured reserve since Week 5.
