The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the host Nationals, 3-2, on Wednesday in a game that ended with Washington scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning thanks to a throwing error by Brewers third baseman Andruw Monasterio.
Corey Dickerson opened the ninth by reaching on first baseman Carlos Santana’s fielding error.
Former Mets first baseman Dominic Smith followed with a single and Keibert Ruiz then walked.
Alex Call hit a sharp grounder to Monasterio, whose throw home sailed wide of catcher William Contreras.
Dickerson scored easily, and Ildemaro Vargas — pinch-running for Smith — scampered home for the winning run.
Milwaukee began the day a half-game behind the Reds in the National League Central and one game ahead of the Diamondbacks and Marlins for the third and final wild-card spot.
Wednesday’s loss capped a 1-5 road trip for the Brewers, who dropped 2-of-3 to the Nationals after being swept by the Braves in Atlanta.
Milwaukee was busy ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline, acquiring outfielder Mark Canha from the Mets, lefty reliever Andrew Chafin from the Diamondbacks, right-hander Evan McKendry from the Rays and Santana from the Pirates.
The Brewers also traded shortstop Luis Urias to the Red Sox for minor-league right-hander Bradley Blalock.
Milwaukee returns to action Thursday when it opens a seven-game home stand by welcoming the Pirates to American Family Field.
