The History of the McDonald’s McRib and How It Became a Cult Favorite

    • McDonald’s brought back the McRib for a national farewell tour in the fall of 2022.
    • The McRib has had at least three other farewell tours. It’s been on and off menus since 1981.
    • In November 2023, the iconic barbecue slathered pork sandwich is returning to select restaurants.

When bidding fans a final goodbye, the McRib appears to be taking cues from rock bands like The Who and KISS. The bands are known for farewell tours that didn’t stick.

The iconic McDonald’s sandwich is also pulling a fast one with fans.

Last year, McDonald’s said the barbecue-slathered boneless pork hoagie would bid goodbye to fans in an event billed as the McRib’s farewell tour. But, the chain confirmed with Insider that the McRib is headed back to select McDonald’s locations in November.

“It turns out not everyone was ready to say goodbye to the McRib after last year’s Farewell Tour,” the chain said in a statement. “While it won’t be available nationwide, some lucky fans may find their favorite elusive saucy sandwich at their local McDonald’s restaurants this November.”

McDonald’s didn’t provide location details. Some media outlets are reporting the McRib’s return to restaurants in Ohio.

For 40 years, the McRib sandwich has been popping up randomly on the McDonald’s menu.

Here’s a look at the history of the sandwich.
