Trevor Lawrence isn’t quite living up to the hype yet.
The Jaguars QB and top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft found himself on the wrong side of a 34-3 score against the 49ers on Sunday, prompting ex-NFL star Richard Sherman to look deeper.
“So when I make an assessment that Trevor Lawrence hasn’t been the generational talent he was billed to be coming out of Clemson, Jags fans were up in arms. The tape doesn’t lie,” Sherman wrote on X. “The team has won because the defense has gotten turnovers.
At this point Trevor Lawrence has more turnovers than TDs on the season. Despite that his team has been winning. He has all the talent in the world however that has not been showcased consistently.”
Lawrence has shown glimpses of the all-world talent that made him the the presumed No. 1 overall pick in 2021 well before he was eligible to be drafted.
His rookie season was marred by Urban Meyer’s troubled NFL coaching venture, and while Lawrence has taken steps under coach Doug Pederson, he’s yet to live up to his generational player billing.
The 24-year-old completed 17 of 29 pass attempts in Sunday’s loss for 185 yards, a pair of interceptions and a lost fumble.
“I think you have got to feel the pain and embarrassment of today,” Lawrence said. “It’s terrible. It’s one of the worst games I’ve probably played in my career. … We couldn’t do anything right, but you got to flush it, too.”
The Jags are 6-3 on the season, though Lawrence has thrown for 2,210 yards with 9 TDs, six interceptions and seven fumbles.
They’re numbers that seemingly have Sherman — a five-time All-Pro cornerback and analyst for Fox Sports and Prime Video — wondering where the real Lawrence really is.
“I’m waiting on this fantastic Trevor that apparently I have been missing to show up,” he wrote on X.
