It would appear the NFL isn’t willing to give peace a chance.
The league fined Ravens receiver Odell Beckham Jr. $10,927 for unsportsmanlike conduct on Saturday for his Week 10 touchdown celebration in a 33-31 loss to the Browns.
The former Giant threw up a peace sign as he ran into the end zone in the third quarter for a 40-yard score to make it a 23-9 Baltimore lead.
The fine adds insult to injury as the Ravens lost the game in dramatic fashion, thanks to the heroics of Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The score marked the second TD of the season for Beckham, who missed the entire 2022 season after tearing his ACL in Super Bowl 2022 as a member of the Rams.
Dolphins wideout Tyreek Hill, who was fined $10,000 for throwing up a peace sign during a 64-yard touchdown against the Bills in a 2022 AFC divisional round game, knew what was in store for his pass-catching brethren.
“Yeah they fining people for that buddy 😑,” Hill posted on X on Nov. 12.
Not that Beckham needed much of an introduction.
Saturday’s wage-garnishing was the fourth of the season for the 31-year-old, which includes two unsportsmanlike conduct fines totaling over $33,000 in an Oct. 15 win over the Titans, and another $21,844 for impermissible use of the helmet against the Lions on Oct. 22.
According to Spotrac, he’s forfeited $315,708 to fines since coming into the NFL in 2014.
Beckham, who signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Ravens last offseason, could take on a bigger role in the Baltimore offense with tight end Mark Andrews out for the season with an ankle injury sustained in Thursday’s win over the Bengals.
With Beckham back to showing some of his trademark flash-and-dash, he could be in line for more opportunities — and maybe even a few more celebratory fines.
