Aaron Rodgers is nothing if not persistent.
He continues to insist he’ll be back this season from a torn Achilles he suffered two months ago, even as the former MVP will turn 40 on Dec. 2.
Fox’s Jay Glazer reported Sunday that Rodgers isn’t only planning a return, but he’s hopeful to return to team practice around his birthday as if this saga couldn’t continue to get any more theatrical.
Asked if Rodgers has a slight chance to return this season, the well-connected Glazer assured, “More than a slight chance.”
“[Rodgers] is actually gonna go back to the Jets this week and start training with them,” Glazer continued. “He actually sent the Jets video of him working out this week, it kind of blew their minds like ‘man, he’s a little bit further ahead than we thought. In Aaron Rodgers’ mind, he is telling the Jets, ‘I’d like to actually start practicing as early as December 2.”
Glazers also notes that Rodgers is “serious about playing” and is looking to return in “the middle of December” from the Achilles injury — which would be unprecedentedly quick.
Rodgers was on the fourth play of the Jets’ season on Sept. 11 as part of their 22-16 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills.
He has since been replaced by Zach Wilson, who has gotten the Jets to just a 4-5 record with help from the play of their elite defense.
Wilson has thrown for 1,863 passing yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions coming into Sunday’s game against the Bills while completing just 59.8 percent of his passes.
Rodgers has said he would return if the Jets still had a chance to makes the playoffs, and Gang Green currently sits on the outside looking in of a crowded AFC field.
Rodgers recently responded to conspiracy theories suggesting that the “speedy recovery” would suggest his Achilles isn’t actually torn.
“All those big brains out there, let me just shoot you straight. There’s not a lot of people that have the unique situation I was in,” he said Tuesday during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
“I got hurt the first drive of the season, I don’t want to retire, I want to come back … My mindset from the morning after the injury was I’m going to try and do something nobody has done before.”
Either way, the Jets are eagerly waiting on his return.
