First-year manager Carlos Mendoza will have an experienced voice at his side.
The Mets are hiring former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons as their bench coach, a source confirmed to The Post’s Mike Puma on Wednesday night.
The Athletic first reported the impending hire.
Gibbons led the Blue Jays for parts of 11 seasons in two separate stints, the first from 2004-08 and again from 2013-18.
In all, Gibbons has managed nearly 1,600 major league games with a narrow winning record (793-789) and guided the 2015 and ‘16 Jays to the ALCS.
After Gibbons was fired following the 2018 season, he did some scouting for the Braves under former Toronto boss and current Atlanta general manager Alex Anthopoulos.
The 61-year-old will bring a wealth of experience to a new coaching staff in what also will be a homecoming.
Gibbons was a first-round pick of the Mets in 1980 and played 18 total games as a Mets catcher in stints in ’84 and ’86.
After retiring, Gibbons coached and managed in the Mets’ system from 1990-2001 before leaving for a major league job with Toronto.
Gibbons joins a staff under Mendoza that will include Jeremy Hefner as the returning pitching coach and Eric Chavez — last season’s bench coach — and Jeremy Barnes both as hitting coaches.
