Parlay bet predicts historic offensive issues in Chargers-Patriots

What a crazy bet this is.

It wasn’t outrageous to expect the Patriots’ league-worst offense (32nd in points per game) to score any touchdowns Sunday, but one bettor didn’t have any love for the Chargers either.

An NFL bettor on FanDuel Sportsbook decided no one was scoring a touchdown in the Patriots-Chargers game, which came in at 115-1 odds, and a $9.99 bet won $1,159.07.

The obscure wager had a 0.86 percent implied chance of winning Sunday.

Los Angeles doesn’t have a completely incompetent offense, ranking No. 11 overall in 2023.

But taking this season aside, you could see a clear roadmap for the Chargers’ offense to struggle mightily against Bill Belichick’s defensive group.

Back in 2020, rookie Juston Herbert was smashed by New England’s defense in an embarrassing 45-0 loss led by quarterback Cam Newton.

They did play again the following year, a game where Herbert struggled.

He threw two interceptions, including a pick-six.

Herbert added a stat-padding, garbage-time touchdown with 40 seconds remaining in the 27-24 defeat.

Betting on the NFL?

The offensive ineptitude was rather unbelievable, with Herbert throwing for 212 yards on 22-of-37 passing, while running back Austin Ekeler carried 14 times for just 18 yards.

Meanwhile, Patriots backup quarterback Bailey Zappe struggled in a 13-for-25 showing, throwing for 141 yards.

It remains to be seen if Mac Jones or third-stringer Malik Cunningham will step up at some point for the Patriots after being shut out Sunday.

The Chargers ranked 20th in points per game allowed coming into Sunday, allowing 21.5 on average.
