Trevor Lawrence is doing everything he can to get back on the field.
Jacksonville’s star quarterback going to rehab “around the clock” this week in the hopes he can play through the high ankle sprain he suffered in Monday night’s loss to the Bengals, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.
The Jaguars also aren’t ruling out Lawrence playing on Sunday against the Browns, according to the report.
Earlier Tuesday, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said he wouldn’t put a timetable on Lawrence’s return and told reporters that the QB had avoided any major surgery with the injury.
“I have not had discussions with the docs about that,” Pederson said during a virtual media availability. “I don’t think [surgery] is a necessary means at this point. Because of where it is in the ankle, it’s not necessarily something that surgery would be warranted at this time.”
Lawrence was injured late in the game Monday, with the Jaguars and Bengals tied at 28 in the fourth quarter.
Jaguars left tackle Walker Little stepped on Lawrence’s ankle, bending it awkwardly and sending the signal-caller to the ground in pain.
After lying on the grass for a moment, Lawrence was helped back up by a teammate and a Bengals player before he succumbed to the pain again and fell back on the field.
Lawrence threw his helmet in frustration and had to be helped off the field by the medical staff.
The QB finished the game completing 22 of 29 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns.
C.J. Beathard finished out the game for the Jaguars at quarterback as the Bengals won in a 34-31 overtime thriller.
Lawrence was later seen in the locker room with a boot on and using crutches.
“Everything’s stable, everything looks good, and we’ll see where he is in a couple of days,” Pederson said of Lawrence’s progress on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old hasn’t missed a game since he was drafted first overall in 2021, despite a pair of injuries that could have kept him sidelined.
Lawrence dealt with a toe injury last year and then suffered a knee injury against the Colts in Week 6 this season.
The question now will be whether he finds a way to battle through the ankle injury like the previous instances or if this is finally the injury that forces him to miss a game.
The Jaguars head into their matchup with Cleveland atop the AFC South at 8-4.
