Shohei Ohtani ‘en route’ to Toronto as Blue Jays momentum grows


Shohei Ohtani, indeed, is “en route” to Toronto on Friday, according to MLB Network, but that doesn’t mean he’s any closer to signing a contract — with the Blue Jays, or any other of his suitors.

The report reiterated that Ohtani hadn’t signed a contract as of 4:01 p.m., and a representative from Ohtani’s agency — CAA, with Nez Balelo — declined comment to the network.

Still, it’s the latest twist in Ohtani’s free agency sweepstakes, which could end with the designated hitter and pitcher landing a contract worth more than $600 million.

Earlier this week, the Blue Jays met with Ohtani at their spring training facility in Dunedin, Florida, and it made them a serious contender to land the two-way superstar.

The Cubs, Dodgers, Giants and Angels were also viewed as possible options for Ohtani, who announced his decision to sign with the Angels six years ago Friday.

MLB Network reported earlier in the day Ohtani’s selection could be “imminent.”
