The Mets claimed infielder Diego Castillo off waivers from the Diamondbacks, the team announced Friday.
Castillo was designated for assignment by Arizona last month and with his signing in Queens, the Mets’ 40-man roster is at 39 — although it will bump up to 40 once Harrison Bader’s one-year, $10.5 million contract becomes official.
Castillo, like seemingly all Mets’ arrivals this offseason, has Yankee ties.
He signed with the organization as an international free agent in 2014 and reached Double-A with the Yankees before he was included in the package that was sent to the Pirates in exchange for Clay Holmes.
Castillo appeared in 96 games for the Pirates in 2022 before being traded to Arizona last offseason.
The 26-year-old played in just one game for the Diamondbacks in 2023 and spent the rest of the season with Triple-A Reno, where he split his time at second base, third base, shortstop and left field.
He has a minor league option remaining, so Castillo can be sent to the minors without having to clear waivers.
It’s the latest move in what’s been an underwhelming offseason for the Mets, who have almost entirely added at the fringes of their roster.
Along with Castillo, the Mets have brought in ex-Yankees Bader and Luis Severino, as well as their new manager, former Yankee bench coach Carlos Mendoza.
