Panthers’ Bryce Young has ‘great head on is shoulders’

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young got to spend some time with Jets veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Wednesday.

The two chatted before their teams held a joint practice. Afterward, Rodgers said he likes what he has seen from the 2023 No. 1 overall pick.

“I like the kid a lot, we share an agent,” Rodgers said. “So I’ve known about him for a long time. I loved watching him in college. I like his demeanor. I like his movement. I like the way he throws. … So I think Carolina is in good hands.”

Young had some good moments against the Jets defense and struggled at other times.

He was intercepted by cornerback Brandin Echols, but later looked in command during a two-minute drill.

He went 5-for-7 on the drive and led the Panthers to a field goal.

Rodgers was asked what advice he would give to Young.

“Be gentle with yourself,” Rodgers said. “It’s a long journey. It feels like every little snap and practice is the end of the world if it doesn’t go right. It’s just not true. It’s a long, long journey. It’s about holding onto your confidence and enjoying the ride, enjoying the little things every day.

“But I think he’s got a great head on his shoulders, and he’ll be just fine.”

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said quarterback Zach Wilson will start the preseason game Saturday against the Panthers.

Saleh did not say how long Wilson will play, but it will be more than the three series he played last week in the Hall of Fame Game.

Rodgers will not play Saturday.

That leaves Wilson and Tim Boyle as the only quarterbacks after Chris Streveler landed on injured reserve this week.

The Jets were missing some stars Wednesday.

CB Sauce Gardner sat out after feeling something in his quad on Tuesday.

Saleh described it as precautionary.

WR Garrett Wilson (ankle) was on the field, but did not do much and did not participate in team drills.
