Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes are breaking their silence about their alleged affair — claiming they actually did not cheat when photos of them surfaced during a romantic getaway in November 2022.
“To be clear, we were outed as being in a relationship,” Holmes, 50, said during the Dec. 5 premiere of their self-titled podcast.
“But everyone else thought we were being outed as adulterous, being outed as cheating on our spouses and it wasn’t the case,” he continued. “Because the odd thing is that the day those pictures were taken and the day that article was released, we had both, at that point, been in divorce proceedings.”
The couple began their new podcast venture after losing their “GMA3” jobs amid the scandal. The public thought Holmes and Robach were married to their respective partners, Marilee Fiebig and Andrew Shue, at the time.
“It was one of those things where everyone in my tight circle knew I was getting divorced. I took my ring off early August,” Robach, 46, claimed. “It was very clear to anyone who knew me that I was in the middle of a divorce. T.J. is a much more private person than me and just chose to keep that to himself.”
“But it was hard,” she continued, “because anyone who was a viewer or anyone outside of a very small circle didn’t know that either one of us were getting divorced, so that was one of the challenges we had in the beginning. We were trying to clear everything up.”
Holmes, for his part, was trying to help his daughter, Sabine, adjust to the new relationship he was in.
“My daughter, I mean she’s 10. I was still trying to get her adjusted to her new reality of her parents not being together,” he said.
Holmes’ ex previously slammed his “lack of discretion” and recently unfollowed both of them on social media. Amid the headline-making relationship news, Robach said she did a “terrifying” welfare check on Holmes when she started receiving “past tense” text messages from him. Additionally, ABC producers couldn’t get in touch with him.
“[I was] afraid he had done something,” she said on the podcast. She and her dad then drove to Holmes’ apartment and were let in thanks to the doorman.
“You were just splayed out on your bed. I ran to you and said, ‘T.J.,’ and you didn’t move,” Robach remembered. “It was the most awful thing having to touch your body and see if you were warm. I was so afraid. You were just incoherent.”
“That day was essentially me getting off work and pounding vodka,” Holmes explained. “I didn’t stop for several hours and took who knows how many weed edibles.”
Robach also took the public news of their relationship hard. “There were days when I wanted to die,” she admitted. “That was something I never experienced before in my life.”
“I just didn’t want to get up,” she continued. “I didn’t want to see what new headlines was going to be out there.”
The cancer survivor called it “a year of hell.” However, now the pair — who recently ran the New York City Marathon again together — are happier than ever and recently made their red carpet debut as a couple.
Holmes described them as “the folks who lost the jobs we love because we love each other.”
“That is bottom line and that is why we are here now,” she continued. “In the end, all of us are always rooting for love,” she said. “It doesn’t always happen when you want it to happen. And it’s undeniable when it’s real and it’s something you have to navigate and it’s not easy.”
“Relationships are hard, they’re messy, they’re not perfect. We have fought for love, and I can say I have never been happier. I am with my best friend.”
Holmes chimed in: “Bottom line we have not said this. I’m in love with this woman and she’s in love with me and we are planning a life together. A lot of you understand that life, love, marriage, relationships can be messy and usually are.”
