Angelina Mango won Sanremo 2024 on Saturday (Feb. 10) with the song “La Noia” (“The Boredom”). She is the first female artist to triumph at Italy’s historic song contest in the last 10 years; the previous one being Arisa in 2014 with her song “Controvento.” Mango will therefore represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, Sweden.
After Mango, in the top five of the final ranking were rapper Geolier (with his song “I p’ me, tu p’ te,” sung in Neapolitan dialect), pop singer Annalisa (with “Semplicemente”), trapper Ghali (with “Casa Mia”), and singer-songwriter Irama (“Tu No”).
Mango’s victory was mainly determined by the vote of the accredited press, which overturned the preferences of the general audience. In the televoting, the winner of Sanremo 2024 received only 16.1% of the votes, while Geolier got 60% (Annalisa 8%, Ghali 8.3%, Irama 7.5%).
“I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect anything of what happened,” Mango said in a press conference on Sunday (Feb. 11), the day after the final. “I was able to live every moment without too much pressure. I received a lot of strength from people and I had the best week of my life.”
“La Noia” is a cumbia-style song that overturns the usual conception of boredom, inviting the listeners to consider it as precious time to dedicate to themselves.
Angelina Mango is the daughter of the late Italian singer and songwriter Giuseppe Mango, simply known as Mango. He died in 2014 of cardiac arrest after interrupting a concert where he was performing one of his most famous songs, “Oro.” Before arriving in Sanremo, Angelina had won in the music category of the popular Italian talent show Amici in 2023.
