Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will be out for what is being described as “several weeks” because of a right calf strain.
The star signal-caller had just begun training camp with the Bengals over the last week but will miss significant time as preseason is set to go underway next month.
“It’ll take several weeks and that’s the information we have right now,” head coach Zac Taylor said Friday at Bengals’ practice.
“Joe [Burrow] got more days this July than he’s ever had in the NFL. I feel really good about the progress he made during those July practices. When he’s able to get back, we’ll be able to get to work immediately,” Taylor added.
When pressed on a specific timetable, Taylor simply offered that, “several weeks is several weeks.”
The Bengals’ only other active quarterbacks on the roster are former Jets backup Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning, who has been in the NFL since going undrafted in 2019 but has yet to take a snap.
Burrow threw for 4,475 yards, 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season, his first Pro Bowl campaign, and finished fourth in MVP voting.
The Bengals will face the Browns, their in-state rival, on Sept. 10 in their Week 1 matchup in Cleveland.
