Bryce Harper’s wife took it personally, too.
Kayla Harper appeared to throw shade at Atlanta shortstop Orlando Arcia after the Phillies slugger hit two home runs on the way to a win over the Braves in Game 3 of the NL Division Series on Wednesday.
“Atta boy, Harper,” Kayla wrote on her Instagram Story, including a clip of Harper hitting a homer to right field at Citizens Bank Park.
She was referring to Arcia’s “attaboy” comment he made about Harper after a base-running error that capped off Philadelphia’s 5-4 loss to Atlanta in Game 2 on Monday night.
Harper stared down Arcia after both of his home runs in a 10-2 Phillies victory in Game 3.
“It’s a super-competitive game that we play, from both sides of the ball, and I enjoy commentary and things,” Harper said.
“I listen to WIP and you hear a lot of stuff on there at times and I just enjoy it. It’s a reason why we play this game. There’s nothing like it. Everybody’s competitive that we play against, and I really just enjoy those moments and the opportunity to play this game and have those moments.”
Harper and outfielder Nick Castellanos showed up to Citizens Bank Park wearing Deion Sanders gear.
Harper wore a “Coach Prime” shirt while Castellanos donned a “Prime” hoodie, referring to the Colorado Buffaloes coach.
The Hall of Fame defensive back has been outspoken about those who doubt his program in Boulder and has called out opponents for making things “personal” with trash talk ahead of games.
“He can look wherever he wants to look,” Arcia said, referring to Harper, before explaining that he didn’t intend for his comments to be made public.
“When you’re in the clubhouse, I’m just under the impression you could say whatever. He wasn’t supposed to hear it.”
Harper’s wife also shared a photo of their son Krew and daughter Brooklyn at Game 3, where they sported matching jackets that read “Daddy” on the back.
The Phillies lead the NLDS 2-1 over the Braves, with Game 4 set for Thursday in Philadelphia at 8:07 p.m. ET.
