Burning Man attendee unexpectedly gives birth on site

Imagine being able to put ‘Black Rock City’ on your birth certificate…

A Burning Man attendee, Kayla Thompson, and her husband Kasey had the surprise of her life when she ended up going into labour on site. The most surprising part was that she didn’t realise she was pregnant – exhibiting no symptoms throughout the nine months – (with even the nurses who took care of her stating that she didn’t look pregnant), instead putting the pains down to eating something or appendix pains, says The New York Times.

In the bathroom of their camper, Kayla Thompson went into labour, giving birth to their first daughter. In the shock and confusion, the pair managed to shout for help with attendees from all different camps coming together. Amongst the crowd of helpers were a neonatal care nurse, a pediatric doctor and an ob-gyn, who rallied to send the couple to the medical tent, where from there they had to face an hour and a half delay in trying to get out of Burning Man due to the weather, whilst their new born was airlifted to the hospital for checks.

A Go Fund Me has now been set up by the husband’s sister to help with hospital bills and baby supply costs, in which it reads:

Baby girl arrived weighing 3 lbs 9.6 oz and measuring 16.5 inches long. She is currently in the NICU, gaining strength every day. Mom and baby are both doing okay, but she will need to stay in the hospital until she is ready to come home. Since this is their first child and the pregnancy was completely unexpected, my brother and his wife don’t have anything prepared—no baby supplies, no nursery, nothing at all. On top of that, the unexpected circumstances have created a heavy financial burden: NICU care (with no release date yet), medical bills, and travel and lodging expenses while they are far from home.”
