Clippers forward Amir Coffey was arrested on Sunday morning after Los Angeles police pulled him over for speeding, according to TMZ.
According to the report, authorities approached Coffey’s vehicle and noted it smelled like marijuana.
Upon searching Coffey’s ride, police found a loaded gun.
TMZ reports Coffey admitted the gun was his, which prompted an arrest on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a firearm.
One other person at the traffic stop was cited for possessing marijuana.
Coffey spent four hours in jail after being booked at 5:05 a.m. local time and was released on his own recognizance, according to L.A. Sheriff’s Department records.
The 26-year-old is scheduled for a court hearing on Aug. 24.
The four-year NBA veteran has spent his entire career with the Clippers, joining the team in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota.
Coffey has played in 181 games in the NBA, averaging 5.5 points per game.
He played in a career-best 69 games in the 2021-22 season, making 30 starts and averaging a career-high 9.0 points per game.
That earned him a three-year, $11 million contract from the Clippers.
However, Coffey struggled this past season, making just nine starts and averaging 3.4 points per game.
He saw his playing time slashed as well, dropping down to 12.5 minutes per game after averaging a career-high 22.7 minutes the previous year.
According to Spotrac, Coffey will be a free agent following the 2024-25 season and will hit the market as a 28-year-old looking to snag a contract for the prime years of his career.
However, with the Clippers’ roster stacked at forward, it’s possible Coffey could be used as trade bait this summer, especially if Los Angeles decides to pursue disgruntled 76ers guard James Harden, who’s trying to talk his way out of Philadelphia after exercising his $35.6 million contract option.
