Chiefs legend Dante Hall has a message for Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback has suddenly become prone to outbursts during the team’s recent skid.
“Body language is everything,” Hall said Wednesday during “Good Morning Football on NFL Network. “When you are screaming and yelling at your players, that permeates negatively. When you had what you had in the first five years, that poker face, we know we’re going to win, it’s in the end, that permeates positively. Get back to being positive.”
As the defending Super Bowl champions have struggled to live up to lofty expectations this season, it seems to be getting to Mahomes.
He lashed out at the referees following a correct offensive offsides call that negated a go-ahead touchdown against the Bills in a 20-17 home loss on Dec. 10.
That outburst followed the referees missing a blatant pass interference against the Packers that loomed large in Kansas City’s 27-19 road loss on Dec. 3.
During Monday’s 20-14 home loss against the Raiders, Mahomes let his offensive linemen have it for failing to stymie the Raiders’ pass rush.
Tight end Travis Kelce also threw down his helmet during the first half as the frustration mounted.
“It’s like my little kids running around Christmas Day, we got you a Christmas tree full of presents and you’re acting like spoiled little brats,” Hall said. “These guys know I love them. As a friend, as a brother, I have to call you out. This is not a good look.
“I’m watching the game with my kids, my daughter loves Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, and you’re acting like that? Come on guys, be better and I think the team will be better.”
Hall, one of the greatest return men in NFL history, wondered if all the media focus on the dropped passes and mistakes by his receivers finally got to Mahomes.
“I feel like the first 13 weeks, he was trying to protect his guys. Everyone knew what the issue was. He was trying to protect these guys,” Hall said. “Then the media starts saying, ‘No, call these guys out.’
“I can’t say for sure, only he knows, but it seems like as the chirps got louder for him to call these guys out, he started calling these guys out.”
