Beckham will hit Netflix on Wednesday, 4 October and will consist of four episodes which will be available to view all at once.

The series was directed by Stevens, an actor who was most recently seen in HBO mega-hit Succession who has also carved out a successful career as a documentary filmmaker.

Before starting work on Beckham, Stevens co-directed 2007’s Crazy Love and solo-directed 2016’s climate change documentary Before The Flood. He also won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for producing 2010’s harrowing fishing documentary The Cove.

What is Beckham about?

As well as touching upon his hits and misses on the pitch – including the infamous moment during the 1998 World Cup game that saw him receive a red card for kicking Argentina’s Diego Simeone and arguably costing England a big win – the series will also look at his life in the public eye.

As husband to Spice Girl Victoria Beckham (formerly Adams) AKA Posh Spice, Beckham soon became the subject of intense tabloid attention as his reputation as a pop-culture icon continued to grow across the globe.

According to the docu-series’ official synopsis, Stevens’ show will “give fans never-before-seen insight into who Beckham actually is, including his family, friends, teammates, and — yes — his shopping and cleaning habits.

“The result is an unprecedented look at an icon who, despite spending nearly 30 years in the public eye, just might surprise you.”

Who will appear in Beckham?

Like any good docu-series, Beckham will include a wide array of talking head interviews, each of whom will offer a new angle on the show’s subject matter.

Audiences can expect to hear from the star’s friends, family and fellow footballing colleagues including Sir Alex Ferguson, Eric Cantona, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane alongside Victoria Beckham, Sporty Spice Mel C and even Beckham’s mum and Dad.

Carlos Queiroz, Luís Figo, Diego Simeone, Florentino Pérez, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo Nazário, Fabio Capello and Míchel Salgado will also appear.

Is there a trailer for Beckham?

“Tonight we bring you the story of how David Beckham became a global phenomenon” says Trevor McDonald in archive footage that sets the scene nicely for the story that’s about to unfold.

Older footage from the ’90s soon gives way to new interviews with key players in the footballer’s life, all while Beckham narrates his own unbelievable life story.
