Funkmaster Flex Goes on Rant Against ‘Million Dollar Baby’: ‘Sounds Like a Shoe Store’

Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex — who’s been a staple on New York City airwaves for decades — isn’t feeling Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby.”

In fact, the legendary DJ went on an epic rant about how much he doesn’t like the song and went as far as to call those who do like it “clowns.”

“If you’re someone that likes this song, you are a clown,” Flex said. “This song… I don’t know what the rest of his songs sound like. I don’t even know who Tommy Richman is. Sounds like a shoe store. Now we’re gonna document this hot garbage. We’re gonna play it now, I know you want to hear it. I wonder if this is big in the club.”

He then says, “See this part is deceiving like it might be a good song,” when talking over the song’s intro. Adding, “Watch the terrible part as it comes in… where you hear the tin can drums,” as the beat starts to build and Tommy Richman’s voice can be heard.

Another user posted what sounds like another rant as Flex plays the record again. This time the DJ tells his listeners that he’s going to play a record suitable for New York in order to “bring us back from the depths of Hell, from the depths of garbage” and then adds that the song “sounds like it was made on a Casio machine.” Flex also says the song makes him question why he’s a DJ and questions whether he’s “aged out” before acknowledging how big the record is.

You can hear the listeners being both appalled and entertained by what Flex is saying in both recordings.

This rant comes at an opportune time for the Virginia singer, since he’s making an announcement Tuesday on his Instagram Story. A few days ago, he dropped a teaser on his IG for his next single with the caption, “Devil is a lie.” So maybe this announcement has something to do with that.

Million Dollar Baby” currently sits at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been on the charts for the last five weeks, peaking at No. 2.

Seems like a lot of clownery is going on.
