Jada Pinkett Smith dropped a massive bombshell Wednesday when she revealed that she and actor Will Smith had been living separately for nearly seven years.
According to Pinkett Smith, 52, the couple had been struggling with their tumultuous marriage for many years and were simply just “exhausted.”
“I think by the time we got to 2016 we were just exhausted with trying,” the “Girls Trip” actress told the “Today” show’s Hoda Kotb, 59, in a special preview, set to air Friday, Oct. 13. “I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.
“I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through whatever,” she continued. “And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
Pinkett Smith told People magazine that both she and her 55-year-old “Fresh Prince” husband have “been doing some really heavy-duty work together.”
“We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us,” she told the outlet adding that they are “still figuring it out.”
Pinkett Smith’s comments confirm that she was actually separated from Smith when she had her infamous “entanglement” with singer August Alsina.
Alsina, 31, met Pinkett Smith in 2015 after being introduced by her son, Jaden, 25, and instantly became smitten with the “Red Table Talk” alum.

2015-2017
According to reports, the New Orleans R&B singer met Pinkett Smith through her son, Jaden, and the pair instantly grew close.
Pinkett Smith later admitted that she and the “No Love” singer developed a friendship based on her desire to help him through both physical and mental health traumas that had plagued him.
In 2016, the up-and-coming singer reportedly joined the Smith family on vacation in Hawaii.
It was also reported during that time that the “Hancock” actor and Pinkett Smith quietly separated.
Following the duo’s separation, Alsina and Pinket Smith struck up a relationship, though it’s unclear when it ended.

In 2020, the “Numb” crooner appeared on Angela Yee’s radio show, where he revealed that he fell in love with Pinkett Smith after reportedly seeking permission from Smith.
“I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation due to the transformation from their marriage to life partnership … he gave me his blessing,” the singer told Yee. “I totally gave myself to that relationship for years of my life, and I truly and really, really deeply love and have a ton of love for her.
“I devoted myself to it, I gave my full self to it — so much so to the point that I can die right now and be OK with knowing that I truly gave myself to somebody,” gushed Alsina.

Seemingly in response to her ex-beau airing their dirty laundry, Pinkett Smith and her husband went viral when the estranged couple sat down together on her series “Red Table Talk.”
“Somebody made a statement for me that wasn’t a statement I made, that went cray-cray,” said Pinkett Smith on the now-canceled show. “I would usually not … you know, that would be something that I wouldn’t comment on at all. It’s a situation I considered private.”
It was then Smith interjected, adding that, “You just feel like it’s nobody’s business.”
According to the couple, they decided to go public due to the fact that “people’s feelings are involved” and “there’s a healing that needs to happen.”
The “Men in Black” star claimed that he didn’t view his wife’s dalliance as a “transgression,” but rather as a means to “do some really deep healing.”
“I guess about four and a half years ago, I started a friendship with August. We actually became really, really good friends. It all started with him just needing some help, and me wanting to help his health and mental state,” she explained. “I got into an entanglement with August … a relationship, yes, absolutely,” admitted Pinkett Smith as her estranged husband sat across from her.
Later that month, Alsina dropped a brand-new song called “Entanglements” that seemingly slammed Pinkett Smith in the lyrics.
“The definition of entanglement / It’s when you’re tangled in the sheets / Girl I know that we don’t call it a relationship / But you’re still f–kin’ with me,” sings Alsina.

Following Smith’s “slap heard around the world,” Alsina released a lengthy Instagram post urging his followers to “choose peace.”
“Choose peace; trusting that life’s intricate puzzle pieces are all forming together for the greater good and mastering of the seasonally sometime chaotic nature of your life’s art piece that’s being formed and painted by birthing life to your internal masterpiece,” read the post.
The word salad of a post continued with several abstract phrases.

“Choosing peace,” however, seemingly applied to everyone by Alsina, who called out the “entanglement” with his ex-lover in a new song titled, “Shake the World.”
“Well, of course some s–t is bound to go down when you tangled up with the world’s favorite,” Alsina sings during a snippet of the song he posted on Instagram.
“What would be the need to write a book about my supposed ‘sex life’ with ANYBODY, EVER, in life?” he wrote on Instagram. “When they’ve written several fantasies, hypotheticals & fictions based about me on wattapad. If you’re looking for that kind of entertainment, go read those! Read the book called ‘HOLY BIBLE’ while you’re at it too, for whomever created and believed these lies.”

Alsina threw fans for a loop several months later after he seemingly introduced the world to his boyfriend on the reboot of VH1’s “The Surreal Life.”
The musician credited a man standing nearby with helping him find “a love that feels limitless.”
“And then what do you know? Love showed up, but in a new way,” Alsina told the camera, before hugging the man in question. “I want to share that and really honor the person that I love and that loves me back and teaching me so much about love and healing.”
