Jerry Jones’ bizarre reaction to arrest of Cowboys’ Sam Williams

Days after Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams was arrested on drug and weapons charges, team owner Jerry Jones had a bit of a flippant response to the whole situation, saying the defensive lineman is “maturing.”

Williams was reportedly charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance after being arrested by Frisco police on Sunday.

The weapons charge is a misdemeanor while the drug charge is a low-level felony.

This came after an arrest warrant for reckless driving was issued for the 24-year-old in January after he was involved in a scary car wreck in December 2022 that totaled his vehicle.

Plano police said Williams was driving 98 mph in a 55 mph zone before the wreck.

Using that previous incident as an example and comparing it to this recent arrest, Jones, who spoke to reporters on Wednesday, said Williams has shown growth.

“First of all, I’m seeing that he is, which is more often the case than not, this sounds a little hollow, but he is maturing,” Jones said, according to The Athletic. “And he is. What was he going, 66 mph (this year)?

“So, he’s 34 miles an hour less this year. Ninety-eight to 66, that’s improvement. We’ll keep working. We’ll get it down.”

Jones also added that he doesn’t expect the recent arrest to affect Williams on the field this year.

“I don’t anticipate this impacting his time on the field,” Jones said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “And I do have all the details. There are some lessons to be learned there for everybody.”

In July 2020, Williams was suspended at the University of Mississippi after an arrest on sexual battery.

The charges were eventually dropped.

A second-round pick of the Cowboys last year, he played in 15 games and recorded one forced fumble in 2022.
