Joey King shared her thoughts on her ex-boyfriend and “The Kissing Booth” co-star Jacob Elordi claiming he didn’t want to make the “ridiculous” Netflix rom-coms.
“I think it’s unfortunate anyone would feel that way,” King, 24, told Variety on Saturday at the Balenciaga fashion show in Los Angeles. “I had a great time making those movies no matter what anyone says.”
The duo dated for nearly a year from 2017 to 2018 and posed for photos on the red carpet for the first film’s release.
“It was crazy. It was a wild experience,” King said about working with her ex on the second movie.
“But honestly, it was a really beautiful time, because I learned a lot about myself and I grew as an actor. I grew as a person on this. It was fine. It was good.”
Elordi, 26, who portrayed high schooler Noah Flynn in the three “Kissing Booth” movies, recently told GQ that he “didn’t want to make those movies before I made those movies.”
“Those movies are ridiculous. They’re not universal. They’re an escape,” he said.
The “Priscilla” star added that the franchise made him feel trapped because, “it can become 15 for them, none for you. You have no original ideas and you’re dead inside.”
“So it’s a fine dance … My ‘one for them,’ I’ve done it,” he said of pleasing his fans.
The “Saltburn” actor continued that he was told he should be grateful for the movies that contributed to his stardom and anything other than that is pretentious.
“How is caring about your output pretentious?” Elordi asked. “But not caring, and knowingly feeding people shit, knowing that you’re making money off of people’s time, which is literally the most valuable thing that they have. How is that the cool thing?”
Elordi, who went on to star on HBO’s critically acclaimed “Euphoria,” also appeared alongside Joel Courtney and Taylor Zakhar Perez, who reacted to Elordi’s comments at a Variety event last month.
“I thought it was a shame because to my knowledge, everybody else had such a wonderful experience,” Perez, 31, said. “It’s a shame that was [Elordi’s] experience on the set. Especially when those movies came out, it was a time when we really needed something like that.”
He added: “I know from our fan interactions, getting stopped everywhere I go, what ‘Kissing Booth’ means to people and what it brought them during such a dark time. I guess the silver lining is he still made people laugh and feel good.”
Despite his experience, Elordi, who was at the same event, told Variety that night: “I’m incredibly grateful to everybody in it.”
The Kissing Booth and its sequels debuted on Netflix in 2018, 2020, and 2021.
