Kelly Clarkson‘s namesake talk show has yet to return, but in the meantime, the pop star treated her fans to a stunning throwback Kellyoke performance of Elvis Presley‘s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” on Thursday (Oct. 5).
The singer went jazzy for her rendition of the track, with her backup band reduced to just a single pianist and cellist for the instrumental. The American Idol winner’s vocals floated over the instruments, as she took her time to sing the classic and romantic track.
“Wise men say/ Only fools rush in/ But I can’t help falling in love with you/ Shall I stay?/ Would it be a sin?/ If I can’t help falling in love with you,” she sang on the song’s famous opening verse, before leading in to the the second and final chorus. “Like a river flows/ Surely to the sea/ Darling, so it goes/ Some things, you know, are meant to be/ Take my hand/ Take my whole life too/ For I can”t help falling in love with you/ For I can”t help falling in love with you.”
The Kellyoke cover comes amid the show being on pause in light of the Hollywood writers’ strike. In the lead-up to the show’s return, showrunners will be sharing the pop star’s biggest moments in a “flashback fall.” The Kelly Clarkson Show will return with new episodes for season 5 starting Oct. 16 from its new home in New York City, 30 Rock.
