Kenrick Perkins “blew off the gasket” at an AAU basketball tournament and got himself kicked out over the weekend.
And his “NBA Today” colleagues were more than happy to dig up the footage and air it on national television during Monday’s show.
Rumblings about it first appeared on Twitter, when Trae Young sent out a tweet Sunday afternoon that “word on the street is @KendrickPerkins getting double techs in kids AAU games.”
That led to ESPN tracking down the footage and Perkins giving a play-by-play of what happened to get him tossed.
“Look I’ve been coaching for three years and I haven’t got ejected one time,” Perkins began to explain. “So I’m trying to ask the ref a question on why did he eject one of my players and he would not talk to me. So when he did not give me an answer, I blew off the gasket. I’m pissed off at this point.”
The former NBA star went on to explain that he tried to call for the tournament director to intervene since the official was trying to kick the former player-turned-analyst out of the gym.
His NBA Today colleagues were laughing in the background.
Perkins told the ref that he wasn’t going to leave.
“First of all I just spent thousands of dollars to come to Vegas for this tournament. I’m not leaving the gym,” he continued. “And then the tournament director was like, ‘Perk you going to have to stand on the sideline, but you can’t finish the game.”
Perkins said his team went on to lose the game, but that didn’t bother him because he was “pissed off.”
“I was just trying to ask him a question and he was ignoring me,” he said.
Perkins has been ejected from NBA games during the course of his career, but getting kicked out of an AAU game is a new one.
Perhaps Perkins will think twice next time he tries to approach an official at a game he’s coaching.
