Anthony Kay, the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2016 amateur draft, is back in the organization after the team claimed the left-hander off waivers from the Cubs on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.
Kay, 28, is a Long Island native and was part of the package the Mets sent to Toronto at the trade deadline in 2019 in exchange for Marcus Stroman.
Kay was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last offseason and appeared in 13 games with Chicago this season, with a 6.35 ERA over 11 ¹/₃ innings.
The Cubs designated Kay on Monday in order to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for another former Mets prospect, outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.
The Mets first drafted Kay out of Ward Melville High School on Long Island in the 29th round in 2013, but Kay attended UConn instead and the Mets selected him again with the 31st overall pick in 2016.
He underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2016 minor league season and returned in 2018 before being shipped to Toronto — along with Simeon Woods Richardson.
Kay has never pitched in more than 13 games in a major-league season.
