A hitting-heavy Mets farm system has added another voice at the top of the hierarchy.
Kevin Mahala, who previously worked in the Phillies’ system, announced he has been hired for an overarching position as the Mets’ minor league hitting coordinator.
According to MLB Pipeline’s rankings, the Mets’ eight best prospects are position players.
The Mets have invested heavily in their prospect base, which has become an even greater focus after last year’s sell-off at the trade deadline.
The 29-year-old Mahala had been with the Phillies for four years, rising from player information assistant to last season serving as an upper-level hitting coordinator/development analyst.
Before turning to coaching, the New Jersey native was a Seton Hall Prep graduate who played at George Washington and for two years in the Pirates’ organization.
Mahala becomes the latest hire for a front office that David Stearns is rebuilding.
The new president of baseball operations inherited a system that had just fired several department heads.
Earlier this week, Stearns brought in former Cubs bench coach Andy Green for a senior role in player development and landed Kris Gross from the Astros for a role in amateur scouting.
The Mets signed 20-year-old righty Joseph Yabbour to a minor league deal.
Yabbour, originally was signed by the Twins out of Venezuela in 2019, made his pro debut last season with the Mariners, when he pitched 20 innings with a 3.60 ERA and 28 strikeouts in the Dominican Summer League.
