New York, New Jersey teams win at Little League regionals


The East Hanover, N.J., and Massapequa Coast, N.Y., Little League squads won their first Metro Region Tournament games in Bristol, Conn., on Saturday to inch closer to berths in the Little League World Series.

Anthony Abrantes and RJ Gossweiler combined on the mound and at the plate to lead East Hanover to a 3-0 victory East Lyme, Conn.

Abrantes, the starting pitcher, lasted 4 ¹/₃ innings and also scored a run, per the Daily Record, while Gossweiler picked up the save and drove in a run.

Ryan Land did it all for Massapequa Coast in its 10-1 rout of Smithfield, R.I. Land, per Newsday.

He allowed one run, on a solo homer by Connor Curtis, in 4 ²/₃ innings and also had a two-run double in Massapequa’s seven-run fifth inning that broke the game open.

Massapequa and East Hanover will square off Monday at 1 p.m. in the winner’s bracket.


Massapequa’s team is no stranger to the Little League World Series.

East Lyme and Smithfield will play in the elimination bracket on Sunday at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Sunday game will face the loser between Massapequa and East Hanover on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The winners from Monday and Wednesday will play in the Metro Region championship on Friday at 7 p.m. for a spot in the World Series in Williamsport, Pa., beginning Aug. 16.
