NFL bettor loses $220,000 on Saints-Jaguars after late drop

Week 7 of the NFL season kicked off with one of the worst betting losses of the year.

A bettor at Caesars Sportsbook lost out on a chance at a $420,000 payout after a devastating late drop in the end zone in the Jaguars’ 31-24 win over the Saints.

Saints tight end Foster Moreau dropped a touchdown pass from quarterback Derek Carr in the closing seconds while trailing, 31-24, on “Thursday Night Football” that would have likely tied the game.

The Saints turned the ball over on downs a play later, giving the Jaguars the win, and the Caesars bettor a loss on their $220,000 gamble on the Saints covering as one-point favorites.

New Orleans would have needed to cover the spread in overtime to cash the bet, but losing out on a huge payday in this fashion is about as tough as it gets.

It didn’t help that the bettor likely went through a wide swings of emotion during the game.

Jacksonville jumped out to a 24-9 lead and seemed to have things in hand before the Saints rallied to tie the game with 6:38 remaining.

New Orleans then had a first-and-goal at the Jaguars’ six-yard line, but Carr threw four incompletions.

Moreau’s drop came on third down, and the veteran appeared to be as torn up as the unidentified gambler likely was after the game.

Betting on the NFL?

“It’s tough,” Moreau said, per Pro Football Talk. “In front of every man, woman and child I’ve ever known. It’s a dark place to be. It’s the National Football League. It doesn’t come down to one play, but it comes down to one play. The team fought. The team fought as hard as we did. It’s just unacceptable, it’s just pathetic.”

Carr was less harsh on the tight end, placing blame on the entire team.

“It doesn’t come down to one play,” Carr said. “There’s so many things that we could have done.”
