Nick Kyrgios will not participate in the upcoming Australian Open due to a wrist injury.
Kyrgios joined the online platform OnlyFans to share the news on Friday, detailing that he won’t be able to participate in the major in his home country.
“This is a very disappointing time for me, but I won’t be able to compete at the 2024 Australian Open,” the 28-year-old said on his OnlyFans, which he created this week.
This will be Kyrgios’ second consecutive year missing the Aussie Open.
Last year, the 28-year-old was sidelined because of a knee injury, which forced him to miss the Grand Slam tournament.
His previous best finish at the Australian Open was a quarterfinal finish in 2015.
“Obviously, heartbreaking,” he added in his statement. “I’ve had so many amazing memories there, and I just want to really get back to playing at the top of my game and doing it right, and I need a little more time.”
Kyrgios, who also had battled knee issues, attempted to make a comeback at Wimbledon earlier this year but suffered a wrist injury in the lead-up, and hasn’t played since.
He nearly won his first Grand Slam last year, reaching the finals in the 2022 Wimbledon, and he also made it to the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open.
“I was so close to winning a Grand Slam [last year]. I want to make sure that my body is going to have the time it needs to come back, so please bear with me.”
Kyrgios, who turned pro in 2012 as a teenager, was ranked as high as No. 11 in the world last November, shortly before the 2023 Australian Open.
Following this year’s US Open, he was ranked No. 192.
Regarding his deal with OnlyFans, Kyrgios said in a statement, “They are revolutionizing social media and I wanted to be a part of that.
“Athletes can no longer just show up on the court or the field,” he added. “We have to show up online too. I want to create, produce, direct and own content. That’s the future.”
