Packers wish Jonathan Garvin a happy birthday, then cut him

Jonathan Garvin got his cake, but he didn’t get to eat it.

The fourth-year linebacker celebrated his 24th birthday Friday, and the Green Bay Packers wished him well with a tweet at 8:53 a.m. that read, “Smile, it’s your birthday!” with a photo of Garvin indeed smiling.

But around three hours later, Garvin was likely not smiling when Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters that the linebacker was getting cut.

Earlier in the week, Garvin had even been working in drills with defensive linemen, per Packers Wire, even though he was listed as an outside linebacker.

Green Bay fans were quick to call out the sour birthday present.

“On his birthday. That’s cold…. I know it’s a business, but that’s still cold,” one user wrote.

Another tweeted: “Worst present ever.”

One user even likened the decision of cutting Garvin to Kevin Malone on “The Office” getting fired from Dunder Mifflin with a frosted cake.

Garvin, a University of Miami product, played in 38 games with one start over his three seasons with the Packers following his college career with the Hurricanes.

He recorded 32 tackles with 1.5 sacks and two passes defended.
