Between all of the trick passes, the elusiveness in the pocket and the two Super Bowl rings, there’s not a lot Patrick Mahomes has proven he can’t do on the field.
But apparently, he has another few tricks up his sleeve that have never been seen before.
With Kansas City punter Tommy Townsend listed as questionable for last week’s “Thursday Night Football” game against the Broncos, the team did have a backup plan in case he couldn’t go.
And that Plan B was using Mahomes.
“[Mahomes] is our backup punter,” special teams coach Dave Toub said, per ESPN. “He could do it. He shows me all the time he’s out there [at practice]. Boom.
“That guy, it’s unbelievable.”
Mahomes did in fact punt previously, but his last experience came 10 years ago during his senior year at Whitehouse High School.
According to Max Preps, the five-time Pro Bowler recorded 29 career punts — 27 during his senior season — and averaged 37.8 yards per kick.
His career long was 71 yards.
Townsend is on the team’s injury report (left knee), though Toub said he believes the starting punter will be ready to go again this week.
But if things go awry, they have a trusty backup.
“He can do it,” Toub said, per Sports Illustrated. “He shows me all the time. He’s out there going on Saturday hitting punts. He can do it all, that guy.”
Mahomes chimed in on X after the contingency plans were revealed and said: “I been trying to tell yall!!!”
Former NFLer and three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt did not seem to believe Mahomes actually could contribute on special teams.
“We got 6,000 videos of you throwing no-look darts and 70-yarders in pregame, yet not one single punt on film?!”
Mahomes chimed back in and said this situation was not a ruse and that he really can punt the ball, if needed.
“Waiting for the right moment! Patience is key!” Mahomes wrote with four crying laughing emojis.
Mahomes has the Chiefs on a five-game winning streak heading into their Sunday matchup against the Chargers.
