Possum dragged off after storming field at TCU-Texas Tech game

Storming the field at a college football game isn’t unheard of, but rarely is a possum the culprit of this sports tradition.

But that was the case Thursday night at the end of the first quarter between Texas Tech and TCU at Jones AT&T Stadium, when a possum scampered across the field before being dragged out by stadium staff.

The Fox Sports broadcast captured the furry creature on the field around the 15-yard line.

The stadium staff captured the possum with a snare pole and pull it off the field.

Video of the scene showed the possum looking quite upset about the actions and looked like it was snarling.

The broadcast had some fun with the situation, using footage of the possum as they went to break with Texas Tech up 10-7.

While the animal may have gotten an unceremonious boot from the stadium, it did get a friendly pet from Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec, according to photojournalist Annie Rice.

While it may be the first time in recent memory that a possum has stormed the field at a football game, they aren’t exactly unfamiliar with football stadiums.

During the 2018 season, the “Rally Possum” became a national phenomenon and an internet sensation when it appeared at the Browns game against the Jets.

The Browns were on a 19-game winless streak at the time and desperately needed a win.

The possum appeared that night in the stands and the Browns ended up winning the game.

A Cleveland news crew spotted a possum outside Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in August ahead of the Hall of Fame Game, again between the Jets and Browns.

In October 2022, another Texas football team had a possum crash a game, when Texas A&M had the uninvited critter appear in the stands before a game against Ole Miss.

That led one fan — Greg Bludau — to jump into action, grab the possum by the tail and take it outside the stadium to free it.

In a bizarre twist,  Bludau had actually been a well-known local hunter known by some as “the most successful public lands hunter ever,” according to KBTX.
