Observations from Tuesday’s Giants camp:
Startin’ Sumthin’
Sixth-round rookie CB Tre Hawkins’ fast start hasn’t been slowed by his elevation to first-team reps.
He broke up a deep pass to Jalin Hyatt and jumped an out route to the sideline against Isaiah Hodgins.
“He’s earned it,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Hawkins’ opportunity with the starters.
Misfire
Daniel Jones dropped a shotgun snap from John Michael Schmitz and the play was blown dead before safety Jason Pinnock could scoop up the ball.
Perhaps Jones was expecting more pressure on a day when the offensive line gave up two “sacks” and forced other rushed throwaways on his six incompletions.
Caught my eye
The first day of padded practices brought a spotlight to one-on-one reps for the linemen.
RT Evan Neal rode out OLB Azeez Ojulari to the edge but was beaten by OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux.
OLB Tomon Fox knocked over OG Tyre Phillips. In WR-CB one-on-ones, Deonte Banks ripped a catch out of Hyatt’s hands.
Injury report
WR Jeff Smith appeared to tweak his knee and did not return to practice.
TE Ryan Jones (knee) and WR Sterling Shepherd (rest) returned to practice, but OLB Jihad Ward (undisclosed) did not as he worked on his own.
