San Jose Sharks off to one of the worst starts in NHL history

It doesn’t get much worse than the San Jose Sharks’ start to the 2023-24 NHL season.

The Sharks have opened the season going 0-10-1 while being outscored by 42 non-shootout goals — the worst scoring differential through 11 games in NHL history.

The Sharks join the 1943 Rangers and 2017 and 2021 Coyotes as the only teams to go winless through 11 games to start a season.

They are also just a few losses away from matching the Rangers’ 1943 record of 15 straight without a win to open a season.

The Sharks have already allowed a league-high 55 goals, including 10 in each of their last two games, becoming the first team in nearly 60 years to allow such a feat.

Their 12 goals are 14 fewer than the team with the second-fewest (Blackhawks) thus far this season — and one fewer than NHL leader Auston Matthews’ 13 in 12 games.

If the season ended today, their 0.45-point percentage would be the worst in NHL history.

As you can imagine, betting on San Jose this season has been a disaster for sports gamblers.

The Sharks are 1-10-0 Against The Spread as they head into Tuesday’s action.

Sportsbooks have already essentially written off any playoff or Stanley Cup chances for the Sharks after their historically bad start.

The Sharks are currently -10000 at FanDuel Sportsbook to miss the postseason, which is, by far, the worst odds in the NHL.

The Canadiens, at -7000, are the team with the next-worst odds.

Betting on the NHL?

San Jose’s Stanley Cup odds are at a laughably high +100000 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

The Sharks will get a shot at their first win on home ice as +165 underdogs against the Flyers on Tuesday night.

On Thursday night, San Jose may get favorite status and their best shot at a win yet when they host the Oilers, who have the second-worst record (2-8) and goal differential (-18) in the NHL.
