The gothic supernatural flick, which ABC News called “a face-plant horror splat” is the ninth chapter in Warner Bros. “Conjuring” franchise.
It stars Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aarons — the latter who is suing Warner Bros. for breach of contract — all returning from the first “Nun” film, which was released in 2018.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” which also opened on Friday, quickly soared to the No. 2 spot with earnings of $3.7 million.
The comedy — written and directed by Nia Vardalos, who rose to fame when she penned and starred in the original 2002 film — follows the Portokalos family as they travel to a family reunion in Greece.
Both box office newcomers managed to dethrone “The Equalizer 3,” which held the first position last week.
The third installment in the assassin-spy thriller series featuring Denzel Washington — which Collider said “may not live up to the previous two” but “still comes pretty close” — raked in $3.425 million.
“Barbie,” which was in second place on Sept. 1, stumbled to fourth, with a $1.45-million take. The summer blockbuster is also already inspiring a myriad of Halloween costumes.
The car-racing video game drama “Gran Turismo,” which Variety said exhibits a “lack of joy in its depictions of gameplay,” landed in fifth with $900,00 in sales.
