The extent of Trevor Lawrence’s injury has been revealed.
After the Jaguars quarterback left Monday’s overtime loss to the Bengals, head coach Doug Pederson said Tuesday that Lawrence suffered a high-ankle sprain.
Pederson described the injury as “just” a high-ankle sprain and will not end his season, painting an optimistic picture, but such an injury usually sidelines players for multiple weeks, and the 8-4 Jaguars have the Colts and Texans, both 7-5, breathing down their necks in the AFC South.
Jacksonville has already played both teams twice.
The Jaguars coach refused to put a timetable on the injury but did not rule him out for Sunday’s road game against the Browns.
C.J. Beathard, who relieved Lawrence on Monday, would start if Lawrence can’t play.
The injury occurred when Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson bull-rushed left tackle Walker Little, who stepped on Lawrence’s ankle on a drop-back.
As the play ended, Lawrence attempted to get up before collapsing back to the ground, ripping his helmet off and pounding his hand into the ground in clear frustration.
Fans were furious that the team did not bring out the cart for Lawrence, who was forced to limp off the field with help from two staffers who essentially dragged him from the field to the locker room.
The team also lost productive wide receiver Christian Kirk, who went down on the opening drive of the game with what the team called a core muscle injury.
Pederson said that Kirk would “miss some time” and that the injury requires surgery.
Little was also injured during the game with a left hamstring strain and his status for this week’s game against the Browns is unknown.
Following their game against the Browns, the Jaguars host the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 17.
