Trevor Siemian wishes he had ‘better’ second half of Jets’ win over Commanders

Jets quarterback Trevor Siemian experienced a range of emotions in Sunday’s 30-28 victory over the Commanders.

“It was fun. It wasn’t fun. Then, it was fun again,” Siemian said. “It’s a blast competing. I wish we would have played better. I wish I would have played better in the third and fourth quarter. There’s nothing like it. Competing and playing and finding a way. It’s not always pretty. Finding a way to win is just special in this league and those moments in the locker room are the best.”

Siemian was not perfect in his first start with the Jets this season, but he led the game-winning drive and did enough for the Jets to win.

Siemian went 27 of 49 for 217 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception in the game.

Siemian was the fourth starting quarterback of the season for the Jets.

“I thought he did a good job,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “He did a good job commanding the offense, getting the ball in and out of the huddle, taking what the defense gave him. Getting the ball in and out of his hands quick. There’s going to be a couple of plays he’s going to want back, but overall it was OK.”

Siemian led the Jets 31 yards on eight plays to set up Greg Zuerlein’s 54-yard, game-winning field goal with five seconds left.

DE Jermaine Johnson blocked a punt in the first quarter.

He said he was not even supposed to be on the field.

The block led to the Jets’ first touchdown in the game.

“Actually, we put in a call where I can go block it because I always tell special teams coach [Brant Boyer], ‘Let me go block one,’ ” Johnson said. “Then, he’s like, ‘OK.’ He sent me a text earlier in the week and he said, ‘Are you ready to block one?’ I said yeah. So, he put that call in and then it was funny because I wasn’t even supposed to be on the field during that. My call didn’t get called for me to block it. There was a miscommunication and someone didn’t come get me off and I was like, ‘Oh well, I’ll just stay in and try to block it.’ Then whatever happened, happened, and then I was able to make a play.”

TE Jeremy Ruckert left the game with a concussion. … WR Garrett Wilson left the game briefly in the first half. He said his left knee got stepped on. “I’ve got to catch the ball, get down, know that I’m a small dude,” Wilson said. “These dudes are hitting in this league, grown-ass men. You’ve got to get out of their way sometimes.”
